DAY IN LIFE

Let's listen in on the cockatiels chatter this morning.

9:00 a.m. Jubilee is talking: "Liberty! It’s time to wake Mommy up. Start talking! Let’s see how long it takes to wake her up." Liberty talks: "Ok, Jubilee. "Liberty is a pretty bird!" "Jubilee is a pretty bird!" Chirp Chirp. A few wolf whistles."

9:30 a.m. Liberty: "Mommy isn’t responding." Jubilee: "I’ll call her. [Jubilee] gives several loud "come out here NOW!" calls." Liberty: "I’ll keep talking until she comes out to uncover us and turn on the lights."

10:00 a.m. Birds together: "Good! Here comes mommy. Now we can eat our breakfast on her lap. Let’s see what she feeds us today." [Breakfast usually consists ittybittybirdiebites.] Liberty says: "Jubilee, we really have mommy wrapped around our toes! She brings us such good breakfast food. I do wish she didn’t insist on us going to the cage after we eat!" Jubilee says: "Oh Liberty. Let’s just be happy and snuggle all day on her."

10:30 a.m.—Lunch time. Jubilee: "Oh no! Mommy just left the room. Come on, Liberty, let’s fly to her. We don’t want her to leave us home alone today. It’s so much fun to ride around on her shoulders or on top of her head." Liberty: "Hmmm. Why does she get those clothes all wet? What’s that blue stuff she’s putting in with the clothes? I don’t like that noise. I’d rather be on her lap getting head scratches."

Jubilee: It’s time for me to fix her face. She doesn’t get those eyebrows combed right. She also needs to get rid of all these freckles and spots! I wonder why she doesn’t take better care of her feathers.

Liberty: "Liberty’s a goooood bird!" "Jubilee is a pretty bird!" [Liberty gets on Mommy’s chest and bows his head for some head scratching from Mommy. Jubilee sets on her shoes and checks to see that Mommy’s shoe strings are tied tightly.] Then, both birds spend time preening their feathers while mommy watches some TV.

Lunch time. Liberty lands in the middle of Mommy’s lunch plate. Jubilee is more lady-like and just approaches the edge. Both birds look at Mommy and let her know they want to eat with her. Note: Any form of pasta with tomato sauce or salsa is a favorite meal.

Lunch time-Supper Time. Birds spend much of their time preening. They may even take a short afternoon nap. When I go to check email, they promptly fly to the keyboard and begin prancing up and down the keys. It’s so much fun to watch those letters move around the screen. If I play a computer game, both birds are content to sit and watch the action. If I am very lucky, they will actually stay inside their cage for a short time while I vacuum the living room.

Supper time: Jubilee: "We share whatever Mommy eats. Then we help ourselves to more millet or other seed."

Evening. Liberty: "Jubilee! Mommy is watching TV. It is time for us to get some serious cuddling time in." [Birds crawl up on Mommy’s chest and beg for head scratches.] Jubilee: "Okay, Liberty. I’ll even help preen your crest since Mommy doesn’t understand what you want. It’s so much fun to cuddle with Mommy scratching our heads."

If the birds are lucky, Mommy makes some birdie corn bread consisting of one package of Jiffy cornbread mix, one small jar of baby food sweet potatoes and one small jar of baby food green beans or green peas. This mixture is microwaved for 5 minutes and allowed to cool down. Then small amounts are crumbled for the birds. Mommy eats bigger pieces with butter.

Bedtime. We get a bedtime snack. Then the lights go out. Birds stay with Mommy while TV plays. Mommy says: "Jubilee and Liberty, it’s time for “night night". Mommy puts birds in cage and closes door. Jubilee begs for one more head scratching. Then Mommy covers cage with blanket and turns off TV.

Now, Mommy can finally get some work done!
